    Threats worked

During the trip to Florida, we rented a car as we were flying into Ft.  Meyers but leaving from Ft. Lauderdale (who knew that Florida had so many forts).  When I picked up the car, the car had a quarter tank of gas in it.  I didn't notice this or look for this until after I'd left the lot as I'd never received a car with less than a full tank of gas.

I figured that they'd have to fill up the tank if they were going to charge the previous person who dropped it off (seems incredibly underhanded to charge someone for a tank of gas and then not actually fill it up).

Anyway, I didn't think much of it and figured this must just be common practice in Florida or something because the rest of my friends who also got rental cars from Avis had the same issue.  However, when I dropped it off, it was a problem.  They said they had no idea what the other location was doing but they were violating policy and the Ft. Laud.  location could not verify my statement.

When I returned to the states, I email Avis about it after spending 20 minutes on the phone.  They sent a nice mail back about how they appreciated me reporting the issue and it had been forwarded to the person in question.  I kindly replied that I appreciated their response but they didn't mention anything about removing the fraudulent charges from my bill.  I also mentioned that if they did not, I would be forced to report the charge as fraud to the government and my credit card company (if they knew how lazy I was, they'd have done nothing).  The response I got back was very apologetic and said they would remove the fee as a show of good faith.  :)  The score is now Me: 1, Avis: 0.

    What's all this fuss about?

After getting burgers on the west side, we decided to go get some ice cream.  The people we were with suggested some local ice cream place that had opened recently in like Wallingford.  We head over to it and when we get there, the line is out the door and down the street.

Having little else to do, we get in line to see how slow the line is moving.  The line barely moves even after ten minutes.  At that point, we've been waiting long enough that we have to find out why the line is so long.  45 minutes later, we finally make it inside for getting ice cream.  Apparently, this Molly Moon place is known for having interesting ice cream flavors and homemade waffle cones.  They were out of the cones so we were left with the interesting flavors.

For those who know me, you'll know that I'm not really one for too interesting flavors (like a pomegranate curry) so I stuck to chocolate and birthday cake.  Let me tell you, as ice cream goes, it was not worth the wait at all.  The birthday cake was fine but nothing really special.  I'm sure that for some people, tasting the different combination of flavors would be cool and new.  However, the basic chocolate was grainy and bitter as it was an all organic darker chocolate.  I much prefer flavors of ice cream that mix interesting combinations of chocolate and taste rich and creamy.  For the first time ever, I didn't even finish the ice cream that I had in front of me as it had a terrible after taste as well.

This hippy ice cream place may be for some but it was not for me.  I can maybe see how some would like it as an occasional diversion from good ice cream but the line out the door boggles my mind.

    Justin
i was actually looking out for someone to assist me with something

    5:54pm Justin

    5:59pm Marc
I meant cool that things have been great for you
    still here
have to leave for Daniel's soon though
    :P
    Justin
    oh ok
I dont know if i could ask u for a favour
    6:00pm Marc
    what's the favor?
and if it's to spell it favour, the answer is no
    6:02pm Justin
eheh..... A friend of mine is very sick..
she is in need of financial assistance . I dont know if u can loan me some amount and help send to her
i will be back to state in about a week i will pay back to you as soon as i get back

6pm was right around the time that Julie told me that she didn't think it was Justin she was talking to.  That's when I looked closer at the IM and realized that it likely was not.  I was pretty amused by the conversation either way as it's pretty clearly not Justin at all.  Apparently, his account has been hacked probably from him logging in on some insecure kiosk in Europe somewhere.  Hopefully he gets my mail warning him and can change his password (if it hasn't been changed already).  Don't trust anything you read on facebook.  :)

    Triple Shot

I also forgot to mention that I discovered the greating casino game ever invented called Triple Shot.

You put out 15 dollars.  You are then dealt one card and the dealer is dealt one card.  You then play war.  :)

Then you're dealt a second and the dealer is dealt a second and you play blackjack.

Then, you're dealt more cards until you have 6 cards.  At this point, you make a 5 card poker hand from the 6 cards and if you have a pair of Jacks or better, you're paid off based on a scale they have.

Now I know that this came probably has horrendous odds against you.  However, it's just awesome.  It's a combination of casino war, black jack, and video poker.  So much excitement and fun in one hand of a table game has not been seen ever prior to this game being invented.

    Vegas Baby, Yeah!

I just got back from an awesome weekend in Vegas.  That is definately the most absurd city I've been to but it's so surreal that being there doesn't even feel like you're anywhere.  It's like you're outside of time for a weekend as you don't really see day or night consistently, have indoor skies and fake lighting, and quite the cross-section of America.

I got there thursday night like 30 minutes early after spending 20 minutes circuling over Vegas.  I'm not sure why we got in that early but it had to be wind of some sort.  We headed to Bally's and managed to get all 5 rooms on one floor which was nice (although the floors were quite big).  I proceeded to help the bachelor lose a hundred bucks in no time.  Let's just say it was a bad weekend for gambling.  Besides the last day, I lost every time I gambled except 3 times.  I won 0 dollars at one black jack session, 6 at one pai gao session, and won like 40 at another blackjack session.  Otherwise, I lost at slots, video blackjack, poker, a few other times playing blackjack, craps, etc.  You name it, I lost at it.  I really do dislike 10 dollar craps too because if you're losing, you lose so quickly.  Then again, had it been a 10 dollar table the last day, I'd have made all my money back.

I did ok in poker for a while and was even up like 30 bucks at 3am but kept playing.  I got killed on a hand I had a flush on the turn, a straight flush jackpot draw, and both opponents had trips.  Both opponents didn't seem to notice the straights and flushes possible and kept betting.  Someone then rivered a boat on me and I lost a lot of money in limit because the losing trips kept raising for some reason (and I was tired and chose to pay to see it rather than folding the flush I was 95% sure I had lost on).  Oh wells.  If only the river card had been Qd instead.  I would have won the pot and the 400 dollar jackpot for a straigh flush.  :)

We had Brazillion BBQ one night which was quite filling.  I had one blue drink and one green drink that I paid for but other than that it was free sailing.  It must be so sad for the people who live and work there as it seemed like every person was trying to make an extra buck on the side by "hooking us up" with some deal for strippers or club access.  I feel especially sorry for the guys on the street handing out flyers for hookers.

We had the crazy Bellagio buffet and ate a ton.  We headed off to see Penn and Teller.  They clearly had an agenda about personal freedoms (libertarians are funny) as that came through a few times in the act but overall it was quite the good performance.  I liked it when they showed us how things were done.

After Friday, I tried to do my team a favor and not bet on the Astros.  It seemed to work on Saturday and then failed me again on Sunday.  Sunday was the best day for gambling as my friend hit 5 points at craps and I won a lot of money.  I rolled as well and hit only one point but hit the 5 and 9 like 6 times each which made me a fair amount as well. I still ended down but felt good about the weekend as a whole.  Twas indeed fun.

    How green is too green?

Going green is typically a good decision. It helps the environment, it's often cheaper in the long run, etc.  However, how much is too much?

I ask this because a few weeks back I received about 10 boxes.  I arrived home and these boxes blocked out the view of my front door.  The contents were my grandmothers' 3 sets of china.  How two grandmothers end up with 3 sets of china I will never know.

Anyway, after unpacking all of the boxes, we found ourselves having about 6 boxes and two trashbags full of styrofoam peanuts.  Unfortunately, these were the completely unbiodegradable kind that last forever (and not the ones that melt in water).  We packed the car full and headed over to fedex to drop them off.  That is when we were told that fedex wouldn't take them.

They said they were going green and using different packing material.  I asked why that mattered since reusing the peanuts seemed far more green than using brand new packing material instead.  They refused to budge but luckily UPS wasn't so picky.

I have to wonder how ridiculous it was to be told that they would not reuse our packing peanuts because they were trying to be better for the environment.  Sometimes one can go too green it seems.

    is that a surprise?

While the terrible economy has put a lot of good people out of work and caused a lot of money to vanish in thin air, I do see one brightish side.  I keep hearing reports of companies going out of business or people losing houses where I have to think "is that a surprise?"  It seems like the system is correctly selecting out certain businesses and causing them to fail.

The most recent example of this was an article I read about a Chrystler dealership that had to shut down.  The owner was quoted as saying that the used foreign cars he sold always sold much more quickly and for higher prices.  Unfortunately for him, his mechanics didn't know as much about the foreign cars so he couldn't fix up and sell that many of them at his own dealership.  This guy and the mechanics working for him deserve to be out of business.  They were providing a service that people didn't want and refused to adapt and learn to provide what people actually wanted.

The guy could have hired different mechanics who knew about foreign cars and sold more and more of them.  Of course, that might not have saved him as the car market in general is ldown but at least he would have lasted a bit longer.

    March 18

    It's that time again

The NCAA tournament is upon us and it's time for March Madness.  Now, I've never been a friend of college sports.  I watched basketball games in college because I knew a couple of people on the team and because it was funny to be one of the only people there (BTW, you should go see quantum hoops if you haven't).

I just find college sports to be boring because the players just aren't as good as the pros.  Basketball seems to be the sport with the least disparity between college and pros (as the great players go straight into the NBA and can be good right off the bat) but it's still just not that interesting.  The talent is just too spread out among too many teams for me to care that much.  I don't think it helps that my school didn't actually win games in any sport.

However, I do enjoy the tournament.  I think it's because every game actually matters so the end of each game if filled with excitement and heartbreak.

Last year, one of my espn brackets was in the top 100 in the world going into the last two games.  People asked me how I got the bracket so accurately.  Well, let me tell you.  I have a complex formula based on strength of schedule, points for, points against, steals, speed index, depth index, coaching index, etc.  It would take too much time to explain it and it's far to complex for most but the most intelligent to understand.

    ...

Actually, it's completely random.  The tournament itself is random to a point so there isn't even a point to trying to actually pick the winners.  In case you're curious, I take the seeds of teams a and b, square them each and add them together.  Then add in a fudge factor of 6.  Then I get a random number between 0 and that number.  If that random number is greater than team a's rank squared + the fudge factor, then team a wins.  Basically, this makes it so that a 16 seed will beat a 1 seed 6 out of 262 times (obviously I don't let this happen as it's never happened ever).  A 1 seed will beat a 2 seed 7/12 times (random number between 0 and 1+4+6 inclusively, if it's greater than or equal to 1+5 then a wins).  As I said, it's quite complex.  Let me know if you want to borrow the WPF app some time to create your own bracket as this method clearly works quite well).  :)
    February 16

    and it's still sunny

    I know, I'm lazy.

Anyway, that night of our trip we have dinner at a fancy restaurant near the water.  We could watch as the rain came down and the waves crashed.  We had a dessert called the black pearl which was this round chocolate mousse inside of a clam shaped crust.  It was quite delicious although the meal was certainly expensive.

The next day we got up early and prayed that it wasn't still raining and windy.  Luckily it wasn't so we headed out to the west side of the island for some zip lining.  As Tammy will attest, it's not really all that bad or scary.  I probably wouldn't do it again there as it was much cooler zip lining through the cloud forest but zip lines are always fun.  Apparently, the wind was strong enough that they were going to cancel the lines for a couple of later trips because our group was being pushed around by the wind so much.  Good views though.

Then we had lunch near the water and got to see some whales in the distance.  We discovered there were whales when there were a lot of oos and aahs and we noticed everyone looking out over the water.  They were pretty far out but it was still fun.  We got to see the crazy Banyan tree which has like 18 trunks (it grows up and then back down and just keeps going) and walk along the beach a lot.

The next day we tried to go snorkeling in the morning but it was still too rough out from the previous storm.  Tammy wouldn't even try to come snorkeling cause the waves were like 3 feet tall (which is practically taller than she is so it's understandable  :).  I got hit by a particularly big one when I turned around to claim how not bad it was and my back still hurts a bit from that.  We never did get to see anything snorkeling as it was raining the morning of our last day the day before I just taught Tammy how to snorkel but we'll get those fish next time.

Later that day we headed out to Hana.  It is a winding road with about 50 1-lane bridges.  There are lots of little huts selling banana bread and coconuts along the way and more than enough unfriendly locals as well.  This is the truly tropical side of the island with dense vegetation, water falls, and cool rocky beaches.  We saw a black sand beach made of volcanic rock and were scared away from a blue pool by some angry looking kids telling us not to trespass.  Apparently, not all of the locals have embraced the tourist and decided to make a pretty penny on it and instead they try to keep everyone out (using signs or dead animal carcasses).

Anyway, the hotel at Hana is the only one and it was quite fancy.  We stayed the night so we could drive when we wanted to and not deal with traffic.  Because we stayed the night, we got to see the 7 sacred pools a bit past Hana (neither sacred nor 7...definately pools though).  It was pretty cool to see as well.  I'd recommend taking a trip to Hana once in your life if you like waterfalls, hiking and greenery but if you just want beaches, no need to spend the 2-5 hour drive there just to see a tiny town on what should be an uninhabitted part of the island.

That about sums up the trip.  Thought I'd make sure I wrote about it so I don't get complaints that I never told you what happens next.  :P
    January 23

We brought the sun back with us

I know I've been lazy and skipped a few of these.  I'll probably mention the snowpocalypse of '08 at some point and my subsequent trip home but those will be for later posts (along with a post about my continuing anger at TV and sports).

Tammy and I just got back from Maui and had a great time there.  We stayed on a property that my Uncle owns down in Waileia.  He built 24 houses about 2 blocks form the water and is invested in two of them personally so we got to stay in one of the two by ourselves.  These houses are fantastic.  They are all tiered so every single one has a view of the water from the dining room table.  They all have 3 bedrooms, like 3.5 baths, and tons of space.  If you know anyone who has a couple million lying around and wants a house in Maui, let me know.  We stayed in one that was furnished by my Aunt and the inside of the houses looked nearly as good as the few.  This place even had it's own gym and infinity pool.

Anyway, we got there thursday and swam in the pool until sunset then had dinner with my Aunt and Uncle.  Amusingly, when we got up in the morning to walk down to the beach we ran into them as well.  We chatted while spending the next few hours walking along a sunny beach and seeing some of the hotels further south.  I was amused to get a call from my boss during this letting me know that I was getting a new boss.  He apologized for calling me on my vacation but I said I felt bad for him because he wasn't standing on a sunny beach.

Later that day, the weather turned.  Apparently it was the worst wind they'd seen in a long time.  The beaches were mostly shut down and the mayor actually told people to stay off the roads (they even closed some schools and government buildings).  We didn't now this and happily drove around in the wind and rain.  Amusingly, at one point the sky in front and overhead was completely blue but the wind was so strong that rain was coming in from the side on us.  It was surreal.  We stopped in hippie town to get some pizza.  The waitress decided to sit down with us to chat and welcome us to the restaurant.  She spent like 5 minutes explaining how everything was local and organic and how they prided themselves on that and I should feel good about myself.  Too bad she didn't realize that she was just annoying me since I didn't really care where my food came from cause I was just hungry.

We spend the rest of that day driving around.  We saw the old cowboy town which was tiny and the bakery was crap.  We drove halfway up the mountain and even got to a point where we were completely in the clouds.  It was pretty spooky up there.

Anyway, I'll tell you the rest later so this post doesn't get too long.

    No comparison

In my continued efforts to use live search instead of google, I have again proven that google search is not all powerful.  Search for "oscar nominations" in both and see what you think.  My personal opinion is that live search just threw google to the ground and beat the crap out of it.
    December 15

    Get out of my house

For those who didn't know, I've had a mouse problem for about a month.  That was about the time my water heater died so they were likely able to get in because of that.  It's possible that they came in through the door to my crawl space as that was open for a while.  It's possible that they came in through the dryer exhaust vent as the dryer wasn't hooked up.  It's possible they snuck in while the doors were open and the workmen were around.  Either way, there is more than one of them at this point and they must go.

We first realized that we had mice when we briefly saw one in the kitchen and one in the library.  A few days later, we woke up to find a bit of a banana eaten.  The next day, a bit more banana and some chocolate was eaten.  We tried setting up some live traps with little success.  We tried setting up no view kill traps with little success as well and then the mice vanished.  Three weeks passed without a single mouse related incident (no eaten food, unpleasant evidence, nothing).

Last week I had my furnace replaced and they found two dead mice in the filter (the filter was replaced a few months ago.  We figure that maybe they were in the ducts and trying to get back or maybe they just ate something that killed them (like chocolate).  We thought that our problem was over until the very next day had more eaten banana.  We removed the banana and all food from the counter but there was still evidence of them showing up so we got mad (we tried catching them alive and getting rid of the food but neither approach worked).

We searched around and purchased the traditional snap traps as they seemed most likely to kill them quickly (unlike the poison or stick traps) and the humane society agreed with our decision.  This morning, I woke up to find one dead in the trap.  I was a little grossed out but a bit relieved to have finally caught one after a month of working on it.  I thought it was weird that the trap was about a foot away from where I left it but those things are strong so maybe it just moved with the snap.  When I went to move the trap, the mouse turned to me, bared its teeth and claws, and gave out a high pitched squeal.  It was the most unpleasantly shocking experiences I've ever had.  I had to go in the other room and just breath for a while as it was so macabre and surreal.

Apparently, the snap traps don't always kill them especially if they don't quite catch them right.  Apparently this mouse was just trying to run over the trap rather than eat the food and so was incorrectly.  What am I supposed to do at this point with a terminally injured mouse who's struggling to get out of the trap?  I frankly had no clue.  I was given helpful suggestions of a hammer, a shoe, a book, throwing him in the trash as is, leaving him, or just throwing him outside for a cat to get.  I tried to search the web but found very unhelpful results.  Apparently, people online only feel the need to accuse you of being a killer rather than helping you out (note that the humane society website says that rodent problems almost always need to be addressed with a terminal solution).

Sigh, hopefully my nightmares won't be too bad.

    Cook unti ruined

I looked up my mom's recipe for chocolate pecan pie last week in order to prepare it for pre-thanksgiving and thanksgiving.  The weird thing about the recipe is that it says to cook until firm (or something like that).  I called her up this weekend and asked her how long to actually cook.  Apparently, she doesn't know.  She cooks it a different amount each time and never actually writes down how long it took.

She does realize that without specific instructions, I'm very likely to cook the pie until it is inedible.  Oh well, wish me luck.

    Using a child's OS

xperienced very much before.  I was forced to use Mac's for about a week straight.  While I'm naturally opposed to Macs because of my job, because of their snooty annoying commercials, and because of their questionable business practices; I tried to keep an open mind.  Note that all but one of these friends were mac people in high school so I wasn't too dismayed to find myself surrounded by them wherever I went.

I specifically used firefox instead of IE just to get the full experience (I know that safari is the default browser but as far as I know, none of my mac friends actually use safari instead).  My initial experience was ok.  It mostly just felt like a normal OS (nothing special, nothing bad) where things were just moved around.  As I used it more and more, things stuck out at me pretty clearly.

Not having a right-mouse button what frustrating to no end.  Having the apple key where it is and having it control all of my normal copy/paste commands was a pain.  That was not designed well at all for someone who actually types quickly.  It's essentially where the alt key is on a PC keyboard and good luck using alt-C often and quickly as it's clumsy and out of place.  Having the OS hide the running programs from me was annoying.  It basically treated me like I didn't know what I was doing.  While I guess this is OK for someone who knows very little, it continued to be frustrating for me.  I accidentally knocked an item off the quick launch bar and it was a pain how to find it to put it back (why is that even allowed that easily).  I also could not use the finder for the life of me.  It was neither simple nor intuitive.  The Vista search capability was just so much better imo that I was surprised as to how many people claim it was copied from mac as the feature comparison is not close.  The home and end don't really do what I wanted them to do and didn't work the same across apps (I thought that mac was famous for that)

Surfing the net seems much slower than on comparable PCs but then I have no way of knowing whether a mac is good or not.  Firefox was ok but on one machine kept crashing (that was a pretty unstable mac).

Obviously, everyone else probably disagrees with how I feel about the look and feel of Macs.  It occurred to me that all of their laptops look the same (I basically used the same looking laptop for seven days and the oldest was many years old).  At this point, I've seen enough of them to think they look boring, bland, and a bit ugly.  People keep tell me about the fine lines and curves but I don't really get it or care.  In particular, I hate the mouse button.  It is huge like the kind of button you see on children's toys.  It also does not respond well to the touch and I found it annoying to use.  Maybe it "looks" nicer than a square button but it definitely felt worse.

Anyway, that is my 10+ hour assessment of macs.  I can see how they are enjoyed by people who don't know much about computers and don't care to know (I also dislike not being able to customize but that's probably just my internal desire for blue LEDs). I can also see how they are enjoyed by people who like curves and complete and utter predictability.  I admit that windows also has its fair share of issues (most notably stability and compat).  However, I will now call anyone who says mac is better than PC without qualifications a child because that's what it was designed for.  :)

    November 24

    You're just making things worse

I just heard that eharmony settled a lawsuit against them alledging that by not providing a same-sex service, they were descriminating.  That caused me pause because I couldn't figure out why someone would sue over this or why they would have gotten the courts to go along with it long enough to reach a settlement.  To me, the case seems completely absurd.

I will admit that eharmony does provide a more serious and unique approach to online dating but they aren't the only ones out there.  Are they completely dominating the market and have some sort of monopoly such that they should have to provide additional services to others?  I thought match.com was pretty successful too and there are dozens of other sites that I'm sure have that.  They match up <300 married couples a year from my info so that doesn't seem like that big of a number.  Maybe I'm just misunderstanding what the complaint is.  I feel like it would be similar to me suing amazon.com and demanding a Jew only section.  Of course, amazon does sell the Jewish items separately so it's not quite the same but it just feels similar.  I could say it would be like someone suing them to get them to create a blondes only dating site but that sounds even more absurd and I don't want to trivialize the arguement right off the bat if there actually is one.

What justification is there for not just finding another site that does what you want as there are plenty?  I know of a few gay people who have successfully found significant others using internet dating sites other than eharmony so I don't really get the big deal.  Why would the courts even hear this case?

Of course, the biggest issue I have with it is how it makes things worse in related struggles.  One of the biggest arguments I've heard repeated time and time again in support of prop 8 is the danger that people would sue churches and force them to provide gay marriages.  I felt that this argument was pretty dumb as you can eventually find a church or minister who will marry you (my brother married in a hotel), I didn't think anyone would sue as it doesn't make a lot of sense to force your way into a church where they don't want you as it wouldn't actually change anyone's opinions, and I didn't think a judge would ever listen to the case.

Then here comes along this case against eharmony that seems fairly similar at a superficial level.  All I can say is that the guy who sued is just making matters worse for himself in the future as this will just provide more fodder for the conservative element to flame the fires.

How to be an a$$ in under 5 minutes

After dropping off a coworker after lunch today, I proceeded down a narrow road that weaves between some of the building we have in the north of campus.  I came up behind an SUV that was waiting for some diagonal walkers to cross the street (if you don't know what kind of walkers I'm talking about, feel free to ask).  After these people passed, I continued to follow the SUV down the road.  The SUV then came to crosswalk and stopped because someone was withiin 10 feet of approaching the crosswalk.  This obviously got me pretty pissed off as there was no one behind me and so the most effectient thing would have been for both cars to pass the crosswalk before the pedestrian even arrived.

That wasn't all that bad in the grand scheme.  I then followed the SUV out to the stop sign at the end of this road.  He seemed to be going really slow for some reason, kept looking like he was going to go into a spot, slowing down like he was going to turn, and then kept going.  I just thought he was lost or something. Now, I wasn't following too close behind him initially but I started to as he did this very odd and annoying behavior.  I couldn't imagine that the guy was doing it on purpose but it's not like he could expect me to stay further back when we're only going 5 mph.

We get to the stop sign and he stops once, inches forward, and stops again.  He then takes a slow turn and stops twice at the next stop sign.  He's clearly taking his time and I can't figure out why.  I figure that he's just lost, or doesn't know what he's doing, or something.  After we turn on the main road (35mph), he's still going like 15 and I'm done living with my frustration.  I then change lanes to go around them.  At that point, he clearly excelerates as I'm passing him.  I'm shocked.  This entired time he was purposefully blocking me, going slow, and just being an a$$.  Maybe I was too close behind him but I wouldn't have been that close if he had been driving at least reasonably which he clearly was not intentionally.  I had to basically gun it up to 40 just to barely make it around him and I certainly flipped him off.  I kind of wish I knew who it was so I could ask him what the hell he was thinking.

Sigh.  Now if only the police officer who emailed me back had been less condescending, I'd be in a better mood.

    The poetry of intolerance

So I'm sitting on a bus headed to NYC from Philadelphia.  I've been happily reading in my seat near the back of the bus.  There are a bunch of younger people in the back of the bus with me and I was listening to bits and pieces of what they said for a short while but they weren't that interesting.

After about half an hour, the young guy next to me pulls out his laptop.  He's apparently from Villanova based on the splash screen on his laptop.  He starts writing something for school and I continue reading my book.  After a few minutes, I can't help myself and carefully glance over long enough to see what he's writing.

It appears to be a poem entitled "Barack Hussein Obama bin Laden".  I stare at his laptop in shock for a few moments and then go back to my book in hopes he didn't notice me reading that.  Obviously, I need to read more so I keep glancing back surreptitiously.  As I slowly read and comprehend his poem, I become more and more appalled.

His poem was one of the most racist and ignorant things I'd ever seen close up.  I was shocked that this sort of bigotry would exist from a seemingly normal and educated person (Villanova always seemed like a decent enough school).  The poem discussed how Obama won because of rap music and the NBA (I believe he mentioned 50-cent and P-diddy for cabinet posts and suggestions renaming the white house).  The poem goes on to accuse Obama's people of the 9/11 attacks and how he would continue to destroy this country as an Arab.  This kid wrote that we shouldn't have ideas anymore as he would tax those too because of Obama's strong red leanings.  This kid even had the guts to use the n-word.  I was physically sick from reading it and couldn't focus on reading my own book for the next half hour. He even claimed that this country would now be a haven for hate, bigotry, and intolerance because of the election which made me want to go "Bwuaahhh!" in suprise at the hypocrisy of that statement coming from this guy.

Anyway, I had another hour of a bus ride so I didn't say anything then.  I'm a little embarrassed with myself for not saying anything but I doubt anything I said would have made a difference.  He had clearly decided how he felt and anything I said would just have caused large public arguement.  I feel someone better knowing that it was also the most poorly written poem I'd ever read even after he wrote it like three times.  While the election of a black president does give me hope in the openness and tolerance of this nation, this event gave me the sobering realization that we still have a long way to go and there are still people like that out there.

    one more thing

I think California is stupid.  If anyone ever wants to pass a law that makes marriage an entirely religious thing and states that everyone now has to get civil unions from then on, I'll gladly sign that petition.

I have no problem if a religious organization or a religious figure doesn't want to allow gay marriage within their own institution but I can't see how they can have a problem with two people going to the courthouse and signing legal documents of the state.  Those documents have nothing to do with the religious institution of marriage and have everything to do with the government recognized union of two people for tax (and other) purposes.  If I recall correctly, the religion and government of this country are supposed to be separate (but appear to not be when it comes to marriage).

    A new dawn

When I woke up this morning, it all came flooding back.  I think that last night when they declared the results official, it was the first time I really realized the Bush would be out of office soon.  No more goofy grins, made up words, and nonsensical approaches to even the most simple and mundane.  I think the thing that bothered me subconsciously the most from the past couple of months was the way that McCain and Palin (and even Biden) tried to talk to the American people.  Apparently, they learned their speech style lessons from the current president.

Why do they think that trying to talk to us like regular folk is a good thing?  Hell, why do the American people think it's actually a good thing (or at least have responded positively to that sort of style in the past)? I don't want someone talking down to me about being their friend, about being a hockey mom, or even about Scranton.  I don't care.  That's what I liked most about Obama was that whenever I heard him speak, he tried to maintain a high level of discourse.

It all just reminded me of how Bush convinced people to vote for him by trying to be a regular person. I don't want an average person being president as they'll be really terrible at it (I think my case has been proven here).  Today, I finally feel proud for the first time in a long time of the president that this country will have and look forward to him talking to foreign dignitaries and giving speeches.  I didn't even get to vote for Clinton and he was too far embroiled in personal controversy by the time I was old enough to really pay attention.  BTW, anyone actually remember or care about Clinton's indiscretions or the "permanent" stain that would put on the office of the POTUS?  I thought not.  Those investigations were a clever political ploy in order to increase support for their party but in the end, they were mostly irrelevant to his actual function as president (and I don't care about something stupid like troopergate either)

Anyway, I think it's still settling in and I'm just exhausted from the last few months.  I would like to say that McCain's speech last night was quite good and should do a lot for healing this country.  Honestly, had he been talking like that the past few months instead of focusing on stupid divisiveness, we might have elected him instead although part of me is glad he did not.  It's going to be a tough 4 years for Obama and let us hope that he can respond to the faith we have put in him.

    Jersey

This is my first time out to New Jersey outside of Newark and/or Princeton.  We got in late Saturday night and discovered firstly that the road signs are terrible, the roads go in weird directions, and they don't allow you to turn left very easily.  Many of the roads are flow controlled SR/US roads and to do a U-turn or get off the road, you end up taking long curving clover type turns.  It's really quite silly and seems to indicate that they had no idea what they were doing in building/planning the roads.

Next, we discovered that late night diners are awesome.  I'd forgotten about them having lived in seattle for so long but it's nice being able to choose from a huge menu at 1am and get at least decent food (and dessert).

Next, we discovered that Jersey girls are trashy.  There were probably a dozen girls in the diner who had clearly been out earlier for Saturday night.  There were one or two who were young enough and thin enough to look ok in the low-cut, short skirt outfit they were wearing.  If they wanted to look like skanky sluts, that's fine.  Of course, there were the other 10 women who were either quite fat or fairly old (late 30s or older).  These other women could not pull off the look at all and just looked scary and disturbing.  I'm still trying to get the images out of my head....yuck!!!

The wedding was great.  It was an east coast wedding so there was a ass-ton (technical term) of food before the meal even started.  This included full bar, cheese, stir fry, pasta, meats, sushi, and a carving station.  It was quite good and it was just the starters.

The band was a 5 singer 12 person band and was a lot of fun.  They did really well with more raw and funky rhythms and really kept the place alive.  The champaign was actually potable and the steak for dinner was tender and juicy.  I only wish the party could have gone on longer as I had a ton of fun dancing (even if they didn't play my song).  All in all, it was a wonderful weekend.

Now I'm in Princeton which the first stop on my whirlwind tour of the areas around NYC.
